This is my first Open Source release after joining Yahoo, which means it has gone through the official approval process.

Linux Device Drivers written for free and FreedomHEC

Category: Technology, Software development, Software — by Amit D. Chaudhary @ 4:01 pm

Greg Kroah-Hartman, author of Linux Kernel in a Nutshell writes on his blog: Free Linux Driver Development!

Yes, that’s right, the Linux kernel community is offering all companies free Linux driver development. ….

… you will receive a complete and working Linux driver that is added to the main Linux kernel source tree. The driver will be written by some of the members of the Linux kernel developer community (over 1500 strong and growing)

…. If your company is worried about NDA issues surrounding your device’s specifications, we have arranged a program with OSDL/TLF’s Tech Board to provide the legal framework where a company can interact with a member of the kernel community in order to properly assure that all needed NDA requirements are fulfilled.

This offer is in effect for all different types of devices, from USB toys to PCI video devices to high-speed networking cards. If you manufacture it, we can get Linux drivers working for it.

There is also a FreedomHEC unconference equivalent of WinHEC conference with an fairly large list of device driver developers participating.

This means times are changing.
It could mean better support for hardware out of box for Linux. It also means for Software Developers like me and many of my ex-colleagues who have done linux device driver development for corporations in the past, some of the work is going away. Interesting… :)

bot-check 1.2: Wordpress anti-spam comment plugin

Category: Software, Internet — by Amit D. Chaudhary @ 10:31 pm

bot-check is a Wordpress anti-spam comment plugin originally developer by Brian at Blue Eye web development.

botcheck-image.png

I have made changes to get it working with the latest Wordpress, version 2.0.5 which is used to host this blog. It requires GDlib and MCRYPT.
Download: bot-check-1.2.tar.gz

Changes:

-Make bot-check work for Wordpress 2.0.5 by correcting the add_filter call in bot-check.php

-Fixed the occassional corrupt image being displayed

-Fixed the comment being wiped out incase of incorrect or empty number (Captcha) field.

See install.txt in the file above for installation and license details (GPL, v2.)

PS: From what I know, bot-check works only with Wordpress 2.0.x. I do not have any plans right now for Wordpress 2.x or later.

PF_RING 3.1 GEN1: Packet capture software for Linux

Category: Software development, Software — by Amit D. Chaudhary @ 5:55 pm

As part of working for Granite Edge Networks, I made changes to PF_RING, originally by Luca Deri. Over the last year or so, I have sent changes as patches to the ntop-misc mailing list, though that has not been possible of late. On a recent request, I have put up the latest PF_RING version with bug fixes and one feature on the Software and Projects page and also sent it to the mailing list.

I will follow up with a changelog later.

Presenting: Google Gadget for Zillow ZIndex graph

Category: Work, Technology, Software development, Life, Software, Internet — by Amit D. Chaudhary @ 6:21 pm

While exploring the web 2.0 phenomenon that my friends at MSN (Windows Live) and Amazon talk about and exploring the housing market to decide whether to buy a house, I came up with an idea. Thanks to the Zillow API and the Google Gadgets API, it was possible to realize it and also to make it available for general public. The result is Google Gadget for Zillow ZIndex graph.

Thanks to Drew Meyers at Zillow for his support and notes on ensuring terms of the Zillow APi agreement were met for the gadget, Zillow’s to allow permission to publish this usage and Robbie at Seattle’s Rain City Real Estate Guide for his tip on setting graph duration type.
The rest is from the main Google Gadget for Zillow ZIndex graph page.

Google Gadget for Zillow’s ZIndex Graph
This gadget allows adding a graph for ZIndex (which is derived from median prices of homes sold) for a specific location such as All of the USA, any state (WA, CA, etc), any city or zip code. I found this to be nifty way to track home prices in a location of interest. It can be added to the Personalized Google Homepage, Desktop and Pages.
A screenshot is below, you make click on it for a larger version.

Google Gadget for Zillow ZIndex graph.

Try it out (shorter version):

Add to Google

Try it out (longer version):

To try it out on your Personalized Google Home, please follow the following steps:

-Go to the Google Personalized Home.

-Click on the link in the top left corner, “Add more to this page >>”.

-Click on the “Add by URL” link near the top next to the Search button

-Paste or type the following url, http://www.rajgad.com/files/zindexgraph_ggadget.xml

-Click on Ok to continue and add. You can press “Add” again to add multiple instances of the same gadget.
-Click on the link at the top of the page, “<< Back to homepage".

-The gadget will by default show the Zillow ZIndex 1 year graph for the zip code 98008 in percentage .

-Use the "edit" link at the top menu of the gadget to change parameters such as Location type (Zipcode, city, state, all of USA), the city, state or zip if applicable, type of graph(dollars or percentage) and duration of graph(1, 5 and 10 year(s)). Click the "Save" button when done.

Please put comments, bug notes as comments.

Enjoy

Amit

Tuxcards 2.0: New release for the Notes taking software for Linux

Category: Software development, Software — by Amit D. Chaudhary @ 7:05 pm

Announcing release of TuxCards 2.0, the Notes taking software for Linux. I used the TuxCards 1.2 by Alex Theel. After waiting more than a year for updates, I decided to go ahead and fix some of the more obvious bugs and added a few features including encryption and text colors. I will also put it up on freshmeat and sourceforge soon.
The main page for downloads (Sources, precompiled executables and Screenshots): TuxCards 2.0

TuxCards right now is the most optimal Linux application for creating and managing lists of notes (I create a lot of those.)

It is the most similar one on Linux to Action Outline mentioned by Steve Pavlina in his planning blog entries and software mentioned on the GTD inspired 43things blog.
